{"id":640,"date":"2022-05-02T14:47:17","date_gmt":"2022-05-02T14:47:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/telehealth-global.com\/?page_id=640"},"modified":"2022-05-02T14:47:17","modified_gmt":"2022-05-02T14:47:17","slug":"dermatology","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/telehealth-global.com\/?page_id=640","title":{"rendered":"Dermatology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Dermatology<\/strong>&nbsp;is the branch of medicine dealing with the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hair\">hair<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nails\">nails<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skin\">skin<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skin_disease\">its diseases<\/a>. It is a unique specialty with both medical and surgical aspects. A dermatologist takes care of diseases, in the widest sense, and some cosmetic problems of the skin, scalp, hair, and nails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therapies provided by dermatologists include, but not restricted to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cosmetic filler injections<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hair_removal\">Hair removal<\/a>&nbsp;with&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laser\">laser<\/a>&nbsp;or other modalities<\/li><li>Hair&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Organ_transplantation\">transplantation<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 a cosmetic procedure practiced by many dermatologists.<\/li><li>Intralesional treatment \u2013 with steroid or&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chemotherapy\">chemotherapy<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laser_therapy\">Laser therapy<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 for both the management of birth marks, skin disorders (like&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vitiligo\">vitiligo<\/a>),&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tattoo_removal\">Tattoo removal<\/a>, and cosmetic resurfacing and rejuvenation.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Photodynamic_therapy\">Photodynamic therapy<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 for the treatment of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skin_cancer\">skin cancer<\/a>&nbsp;and precancerous growths.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phototherapy\">Phototherapy<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 including the use of narrowband UVB, broadband UVB, psoralen and UVB.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tattoo_removal\">Tattoo removal<\/a>&nbsp;with laser.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tumescent_technique\">Tumescent liposuction<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 liposuction was invented by a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gynecology\">gynecologist<\/a>. A dermatologist (Dr.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeffrey_A._Klein\">Jeffrey A. Klein<\/a>) adapted the procedure to local infusion of dilute anesthetic called tumescent liposuction. This method is now widely practiced by dermatologists, plastic surgeons and gynecologists.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-31\">[31]<\/a><\/sup><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cryosurgery\">Cryosurgery<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 for the treatment of warts, skin cancers, and other dermatosis.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radiation_therapy\">Radiation therapy<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 although rarely practiced by dermatologists, many dermatologist continue to provide radiation therapy in their office.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vitiligo_surgery\">Vitiligo surgery<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 Including procedures like autologous melanocyte transplant, suction blister grafting and punch grafting.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allergy_testing\">Allergy testing<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 &#8216;Patch testing&#8217; for contact dermatitis.<\/li><li>Systemic therapies \u2013 including antibiotics, immunomodulators, and novel injectable products.<\/li><li>Topical therapies \u2013 dermatologists have the best understanding of the numerous products and compounds used topically in medicine.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology\">http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teledermatology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teledermatology\">Teledermatology<\/a>\u00a0is a form of dermatology where telecommunication technologies are used to exchange medical information via all kinds of media (audio, visual and also data communication, but typically photos of dermatologic conditions) usually made by non-dermatologists for evaluation off-site by dermatologists).<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-24\">[24]<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-25\">[25]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0This subspecialty deals with options to view skin conditions over a large distance to provide\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Knowledge_exchange\">knowledge exchange<\/a>,<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-26\">[26]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0to establish second-opinion services for experts<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-27\">[27]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0or to use this for follow-up of individuals with chronic skin conditions.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-28\">[28]<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-29\">[29]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Teledermatology can reduce wait times by allowing dermatologists to treat minor conditions online while serious conditions requiring immediate care are given priority for appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pediatric Dermatology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Physicians can qualify for this specialization by completing both a pediatric residency and a dermatology residency. Or they might elect to complete a post-residency fellowship.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-23\">[23]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0This field encompasses the complex diseases of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neonate\">neonates<\/a>, hereditary skin diseases or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genodermatosis\">genodermatoses<\/a>, and the many difficulties of working with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pediatric\">pediatric<\/a>\u00a0population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mohs Surgery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The dermatologic subspecialty called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mohs_surgery\">Mohs surgery<\/a>\u00a0focuses on the excision of skin cancers using a tissue-sparing technique that allows intraoperative assessment of 100% of the peripheral and deep tumor margins developed in the 1930s by Dr.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederic_E._Mohs\">Frederic E. Mohs<\/a>. The procedure is defined as a type of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CCPDMA\">CCPDMA<\/a>\u00a0processing. Physicians trained in this technique must be comfortable with both pathology and surgery, and dermatologists receive extensive training in both during their residency. Physicians who perform Mohs surgery can receive training in this specialized technique during their dermatology residency, but many will seek additional training either through preceptorships to join the American Society for Mohs Surgery<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0or through formal one- to two-year Mohs surgery fellowship training programs administered by the American College of Mohs Surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Immunodermatology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This field specializes in the treatment of immune-mediated skin diseases such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lupus\">lupus<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bullous_pemphigoid\">bullous pemphigoid<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pemphigus_vulgaris\">pemphigus vulgaris<\/a>, and other immune-mediated skin disorders.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-abderm.org-19\">[19]<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-20\">[20]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Specialists in this field often run their own immunopathology labs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dermatopathology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A\u00a0<strong>dermatolopathologist<\/strong>\u00a0is a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pathologist\">pathologist<\/a>\u00a0or dermatologist who specializes in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pathology\">pathology<\/a>\u00a0of the skin. This field is shared by dermatologists and pathologists. Usually a dermatologist or pathologist will complete one year of dermatopathology fellowship. This usually includes six months of general pathology, and six months of dermatopathology.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-18\">[18]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Alumni of both specialties can qualify as dermatopathologists. At the completion of a standard residency in dermatology, many dermatologists are also competent at dermatopathology. Some dermatopathologists qualify to sit for their examinations by completing a residency in dermatology and one in pathology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cosmetic Dermatology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dermatologists have been leaders in the field of cosmetic surgery.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-Andrews-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Some dermatologists complete fellowships in surgical dermatology. Many are trained in their residency on the use of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Botox\">botox<\/a>, fillers, and laser surgery. Some dermatologists perform cosmetic procedures including&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liposuction\">liposuction<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blepharoplasty\">blepharoplasty<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Face_lift\">face lifts<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-15\">[15]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-16\">[16]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermatology#cite_note-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Most dermatologists limit their cosmetic practice to minimally invasive procedures.
